How to install a glass splashback
Glass splashbacks are an excellent idea for your kitchen due to their elegance. After deciding which colour and design suit your kitchen décor appropriately, you need to arrange for installation. You can opt for DIY installation if you have excellent skills. You can fit a glass splashback using the following steps:
Surface preparation
Before installation, surface preparation is necessary to ensure that the intended wall is flat and dry. It is also advisable to clean the wall thoroughly to remove any contaminants that may interfere with installation. Any peeling wallpaper or flaking paint should be sanded down. You may also need to replaster the wall before fitting the splashback. As glass is a transparent material, failing to clean the wall may result in smudges and marks behind the glass.
Taking measurements
Many glass splashbacks cover a defined section of a wall, most especially behind the sink or cooktop. For aesthetic appeal, you need to ensure that the splashback fits appropriately. For this reason, you should use a tape measure and check all the dimensions of the wall. Ensure that the hob fits appropriately in line with the manufacturer's instructions. If you use screws to fix the splashback, you will need to measure and mark the points of attaching screws. You will also need to measure for clearance to allow a gap for application of sealant.
Fixings
Note that there are two methods of installing a splashback: using screws or adhesives. Using an adhesive is easier in comparison to screws. All you need to do is apply an adhesive to the back of the splashback and press it against the wall until the adhesive cures. One benefit of using sealants is that it has a smooth finish and no clear fixing points. You should enquire from your supplier what sealant the manufacturer recommends for installation; this sealant should be heat-resistant.
On the other hand, using screws is complicated. You need to fix the screw head into the glass carefully to avoid cracking the glass. It also leaves a visible screw head. Screws are available in different types and most come with the splashback as a packaged kit.
Drying
If you opt to use a sealant, it is advisable to give it time to dry before touching the splashback. Drying time ensures that the splashback is secure. You should also clean off any excess sealant and the countertop. If you have insufficient DIY skills, hire a professional for your glass splashback installation.
